Harry Callahan was born in Detroit, Michigan. In his early life he worked at Chrysler and laster left to study engineering at Michigan State University. A short time after he went back to working at Chrysler and joined a camera club. He then got a job teaching photography at the Institute of Design. Towards the end of his working life he moved to Rhode Island to create a photography club until retirement in 1977. Harry was known for never leaving any kind of written records: including diaries, letters, and scrapbooks. He loved photography so much every morning he would dedicate time to take photos. Yet he only produced a small number of photos each year. He would take photos of his wife and daughters and also the city he lived in. He really had an interest in showing a sense of line and form. He even worked with double exposures. All of his work earned him the National Medal of Arts in 1996.
