Cindy Sherman's photos were all focused on self portraits. The portraits are all over, from normal pictures taken of a subject in the city to a colorful background and the subject is dressed as a clown. I believe she really tried to find the subjects personality and incorporate it in the photo. It also seems that all of her subjects are females.
Cindy Sherman was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. She was the youngest of five children. In 1972 she enrolled into the Visual Arts department at Buffalo State College where she actually began painting. During this time she found herself exploring and dressing up as different characters. She began to focus more on the idea of her work and believed she could achieve this by photography instead of painting. After switching to photography she began to get noticed nationally.

Harry Callahan was born in Detroit, Michigan. In his early life he worked at Chrysler and laster left to study engineering at Michigan State University. A short time after he went back to working at Chrysler and joined a camera club. He then got a job teaching photography at the Institute of Design. Towards the end of his working life he moved to Rhode Island to create a photography club until retirement in 1977. Harry was known for never leaving any kind of written records: including diaries, letters, and scrapbooks. He loved photography so much every morning he would dedicate time to take photos. Yet he only produced a small number of photos each year. He would take photos of his wife and daughters and also the city he lived in. He really had an interest in showing a sense of line and form. He even worked with double exposures. All of his work earned him the National Medal of Arts in 1996. |
